Background of the study
Igbo oral traditions are steeped in cultural symbolism, where syntax plays a crucial role in conveying communal values and identity. Traditional storytellers and performers utilize unique syntactic constructions, such as repetitive structures, parallelism, and specific clause orders, to encapsulate cultural narratives. This study appraises how such syntactic features not only enhance the aesthetic quality of oral literature but also serve as markers of Igbo cultural identity (Nwachukwu, 2023). Analysis of recorded folktales, proverbs, and ceremonial speeches reveals that these syntactic choices reinforce communal bonds and differentiate Igbo cultural expressions from other linguistic traditions (Okafor, 2024). The research further explores the dynamic interplay between traditional syntactic forms and the influences of modernization, examining how cultural identity is negotiated through language. By employing qualitative discourse analysis and ethnographic methods, the study aims to document the syntactic strategies that underpin the preservation of cultural heritage, highlighting their importance in sustaining the vibrancy of Igbo oral traditions (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite recognition of the cultural importance of syntax in Igbo oral traditions, systematic studies on its role in conveying cultural identity are scarce. Preliminary observations suggest that modernization may be diluting traditional syntactic forms, potentially weakening cultural expression (Eze, 2023). This study addresses the gap by analyzing how syntax functions as a vehicle for cultural continuity, thereby informing preservation efforts.
Objectives of the study

  • To document the syntactic strategies used in Igbo oral traditions.
  • To analyze how these strategies convey cultural identity.
  • To assess the impact of modernization on traditional syntactic forms.
    Research questions
  • What are the key syntactic features in Igbo oral traditions?
  • How do these features reinforce cultural identity?
  • How is modernization affecting traditional syntax?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the integral role of syntax in preserving cultural identity. Its findings will aid cultural preservation initiatives and contribute to theoretical discussions on language and identity, benefiting educators, linguists, and community leaders (Uzo, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to assessing the role of syntax in conveying cultural identity in Igbo oral traditions. It does not extend to written texts or other genres.
    Definitions of terms
  • Oral Traditions: The transmission of cultural narratives through spoken word.
  • Cultural Identity: The sense of belonging derived from shared cultural traits.
